StatCounter Global Stats, the new free analysis tool, reports that Mozilla Firefox 3 outstripped Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 for the first time in February with a 24% market share. While Internet Explorer 7 continues to lead globally with 41% market share IE 6 has fallen from 28% in July 2008 to 22% in February 2009.
The growth in number of users of Firefox 3 browser can be explained by their upgrading to a new version with the share of Firefox 2 down to 3%.
Combined market share of Microsoft’s IE 7 and IE 6 dropped from 68% in July last year to 63% while the community of IE 8 users accounts for just 1% of the market. Firefox 3 and 2 has grown from 25% in July 2008 to 27% in February 2009.
